The Witcher 3 Next-Gen PS5 and Xbox Series X release New Holiday 2022 Release Window

Today marks the seventh anniversary of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and CD Projekt Red have given fans a reason to celebrate by announcing a new release window for 2022 for the game’s next-generation update. This comes as somewhat of a pleasant surprise, as CDPR recently delayed the update indefinitely after restoring development from Saber Interactive. The update progress might be back to square one, but looking at this latest update, it looks like that wasn’t the case.

The news comes not long after the updated ports of the game were delayed indefinitely. Last month, CD Projekt Red revealed that the delays had taken place as the project was being brought back in-house. The resulting assessment of the update’s scope meant that the launch would be pushed back out of the previously-planned Q2 release date, with no other information available.

The next-gen version of Geralt’s adventures has had a difficult time over the past couple of years. Originally due to launch in late 2021, internal teams at CD Projekt Red suggested that the project be moved back. While Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t directly mentioned in those discussions, the difficult time that that game had at release is likely to have contributed to the original decision to move back to The Witcher 3 on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Toss a coin to Witcher 3 again

Seeing the news on the update is unexpected as only last month, the developer announced that The Witcher 3 PS5 and Xbox Series X update had been delayed indefinitely. The update was previously handled by Saber Interactive but has since been brought in-house.

However, the Polish-based studio is confident of getting the update out this year, which is encouraging. The Witcher 3 is one of the most critically acclaimed games of the last decade, and the prospect of the game running on more powerful hardware such as the PS5 is undoubtedly exciting.
