Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin introduces the almighty Royal Monsters, who are actually familiar faces of the Monster Hunter universe. These are ferocious monsters that are much more powerful than what you actually find in Monster Dens and roaming a field, and they are usually in fixed locations in each region you visit. Each place has its own royal monsters to be found, and trust me when I say they are each a tough nut to crack. Below we take a look at how to defeat them and snap their egg, as most of them are actually rideable and make powerful allies in the process.
How to tame royal monsters in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
As with any other monster in the game, in order to turn these royal creatures into a monstie, you need to find their egg and hatch it. However, unlike the normal monsters, you won’t find any of their eggs in nests by chance for any time soon. You must first defeat a royal monster and withdraw it to its cave, then follow it and grab its egg.
This is easier said than done, however, because Royal Monsters are exceptionally strong and usually unbeatable when you first meet them unless you’ve bred for a while. Navirou will notify you when you are close to a royal monster and it tends to sleep in fixed places instead of walking around. This makes them easy to avoid, but if sooner or later you want to add them to your group, you’ll have to face them directly.
Any battle with a royal monster is a challenge, so you need to be prepared to win it. They tend to use multiple attack types and it goes without saying that their attacks can literally hit you in one shot if you are on a lower level than you should be to face them. Like any other monster, in addition to their respective attack types, they have weaknesses and resistances. You have to make sure that you win every head-to-head instance with them, otherwise they can wipe you out instantly. Breaking their monster parts is also crucial as they tend to associate special techniques with these parts. Making them unable to carry out some of their attacks will be the key to success.
Once you have a handle on the combat strategy and are actually able to defeat the monster, there are a few more things to do so that it can retreat into its cave. First and foremost, don’t forget to throw them a paintball before defeating them. This increases the chance of withdrawal significantly, so it is absolutely necessary. Apart from that, you will have to break so many parts of this monster to further increase the chances and finally try to complete the necessary requirements that will increase your chance of retreat by a huge amount. Take Tigrex, for example. Its unique requirement is to break its headboard with a greatsword after being staggered by a shock trap. The requirements are so specific, but it’s worth it. If you manage to pull this out, the chance of retreat increases many times over and, in connection with a paintball, you have more chances of retreat. You can check a monster’s specific requirements on the Monsterpedia page, so be sure to check it out if you can.
When everything is done and the royal monsters retreat to their lair, just follow him and grab the egg from this nest. It will always be the monster’s egg, so enjoy your new powerful monstie. Additionally, when defeating a royal monster, its eggs will appear in Monster Dens as well, although not as often as other monsters.
