The Underworld in Elden Ring is a second in-between level that exists completely separate from the overworld. It consists of several separate areas that are optional to explore. You don’t have to set foot in these subterranean realms to complete the game, but it’s worth it.

Secret Areas in the Elden Ring

Below the standard world map is a second level that you cannot see at first. Even after finding various parts of the map, you only have access to the landscape of the overworld.

Only when you have found and entered one of the underground areas can you switch between the above and below ground representation on the world map by pressing the right stick.

  • The underworld regions have map fragments that you can find to reveal the details of the environment.
  • In some underground regions, you can summon and ride Stormwind.
  • Switch between the two levels of the world map by pressing R3 (the right stick), and you can fast travel to an above-ground place of grace.

Siofra

The Siofra is an underground river that runs between Limgrave and Camelid. Access is via an elevator, and the area has a gorgeous night sky full of stars as if the area were outdoors.

  • access via: Fountain at Siofra in East Library (in the Cloud Forest next to the Lesser Earth Tree)
  • Alternate Access: Deep Well of Siofra in Caelid (only available after traversing Siofra once and unlocking the northeast elevator)

Aisle

  • The Ainsel River runs below Liurnia and is a complex cave system infested with ants, basilisks and other abominations.
    • Access via: Fountain at the Ainsel in East Liurnia (follows the cliff path north from the Carian Lecture Hall)
    • Alternate Access: Teleporter in Renna’s Tower in the Three Sisters area (only available after you’ve made significant progress in Ranni’s quest). Coffin in the Depths of Deeproot.
    • Connected to other areas:
    • Leads to: Moonlight Altar
    • Bosses at the Ainsel:

Depths of deep root

  • The Depths of Deeproot extend beneath the royal capital of Leyndell on the Altus Plateau. They are a composite of vast roots centered on the Nameless Eternal City.
    • Access via: The coffin after the boss fight against Brave Gargoyle in the aqueduct at Siofra.
    • Alternate Access: Via a secret wall on the lowest level of the Cathedral of the Lost (diagonally across from the place of mercy “Outlaw the Raging Flame,” see Hyetta’s quest)
    • Connected to other areas: no
    • Bosses in the Depths of Deeproot:

Mohgwyn Palace and the Mausoleum

Mohgwyn Palace and the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum are near, but not accessible from, the Siofra area. It’s a desolate area with challenging enemies, a central blood lake, and worthwhile rune farming spots.

Head up the hill behind the ghost and kill the Perfumer enemy standing guard at the top. Behind him, you will notice an out-of-place looking jar. Roll into it to reveal the hidden NPC Albus.
