Many different mechanics play a role in the dynamic medieval battles of Chivalry 2. Learning the basics will be essential to your survival on the battlefield. In this beginner’s guide to Chivalry 2, we are going to share the tips and tricks you should know before playing. And even if you’ve already played there, a few tips that the tutorial won’t necessarily go down well with.
Tips for beginners for chivalry 2
Chivalry 2 is a pure medieval fight and that will depend heavily on the hand-to-hand variant. While there are things like bows and arrows and crossbows, most of the action is when you are up close and personal. Bookmark this guide for anything you find useful. You can also find an archive of all our guides for Chivalry 2 here.
The first thing to keep in mind in Chivalry 2 is the class you are using. You’ll likely switch between them until you find a good fit, but below is a detailed description from our in-depth Chivalry 2 class guide.
Choose a faction
There are two factions in Chivalry 2: The Agatha Knights or the Mason Order. It’s such a good thing, a bad thing. However, it doesn’t matter which one you choose. You basically choose either red or blue and you will make that choice when the teams are even. For a more detailed look at choosing a faction and what that election does, head over to this guide.
Choosing the right class
There are four classes in Chivalry 2 with a total of 12 subclasses. As a beginner in the game, you will have access to four classes with the option to unlock the others as you play. The main classes are: archer, vanguard, foot soldier and knight.
Archer
Archer deals with ranged attacks and consists of the following three subclasses:
- Longbowman – long range pest, but does poor hand-to-hand combat.
- Crossbowman – medium range with good damage and can heal your team, but has to stand still to reload.
- Skirmishers – short range (throwing weapons) but has access to a shield.
vanguard
- Devastator – has access to the largest weapons in Chivalry 2 and can use them without sacrificing movement speed. Has only one knife as secondary and low base health.
- Ambusher – Melee / ranged combat hybrid that uses thrown weapons and speed to murder opponents.
- Raider – can carry two main weapons and has a horn that heals allies.
Poleman
- Poleman – long guns with excellent range and can use the Knight’s Tackle ability.
- Man-at-Arms – uses a smaller shield and weapon than the Guardian, but is more nimble.
- Field Engineer – Support subclass that sets traps and barricades. Heals for 25% of their health when they heal a teammate. Can’t really hold its own in a fight.
Knight
- Officer – melee / support / ranged combat hybrid ideal for new players: uses solid melee weapons, has throwing knives and can heal with her horn.
- Guardian – the bulkier cousin of Man-At-Arms, which is effectively Chivalry 2’s tank class. Stand back and take punches while teammates flank to take down distracted enemies.
- Crusader – the knight version of the devastator. However slower due to the movement speed penalty, but has access to more powerful two-handed weapons.
Now that you have the class, it’s time to step onto the battlefield
Combat bases
The fight of Chivalry 2 is slow and deliberate. Taking the time to learn all of the nuances of the game will keep you alive no matter what platform you are playing on and whether you are playing with a controller or a mouse. There are some core skills your character will have when using melee weapons in Chivalry 2. This includes blocking, countering and more. If you take the time to master these things, you can win duels in the game. It doesn’t often happen that you take your time in a fight. You manage your stamina and health and usually there is more than one enemy around.
The most useful feature is the ability to pull your attacks. This means that you can hit multiple enemies at the same time by dragging the controller or your mouse view to a specific side while swinging your weapon. A full description of what drag is in Chivalry 2 can be found in this guide.
Block and counter
Blocking is probably the most important skill in Chivalry 2. You will have to do it a lot and it can really bail you out until the cavalry arrives. Blocking is pretty easy as it doesn’t require precision, just the push of a button. What comes after a block, however, are the counters, ripostes, and feinting. These moves can turn your opponent’s tables and knock them back after a successful block.

Play the goal
Chivalry 2’s meat and potatoes will be largely objective gameplay. This means that you want to work with your teammates to achieve certain goals. This could be escorting a convoy, defending an area, or simply knocking down all enemies on the field. Always pay attention to the goal and you can do this at the very top of the screen which will show you the goal and its progress. At the bottom of the screen you can see how many players from each side are in the target area.
You will definitely get a good feel for the teamwork that is needed in Chivalry 2 playing the objectives, and that teamwork carries over to fights as well.
Glue together
Do you know what’s better than a huge ax as a weapon? Two huge axes. Stay with your friends and outperform your opponents. One-on-one fights are a rarity in the world of chivalry. Get tangled up with an individual in one place for too long and you are sure to be picked up by an archer or stabbed in the back by another player. If you stick with your teammates, you can do the backstabbing and overwhelm your opponents. While jumping into battle on your own can be fun, it probably won’t take long.
Clean up the trash
While some call it homicide, we call it helping. Look for enemies who are currently in combat and kill them while defenseless. It’s the easiest way to get 2 kills in Chivalry and a perfectly valid way to level up and advance in the game. It is not an honor to fight one on one in this game so help your friends when you see them engaged in a fight.
End downed enemies
The action in Chivalry 2 is hectic, but you have to be careful whether an enemy dies completely or just goes down. When they’re down, you’ll have to give them the final blow to get them out of the game. If they’re not done, they can be resuscitated by their teammates, so don’t let them crawl away.
Alternative…
Revive your fallen teammates
When you see teammates crawling around on the floor, you can revive them. Just go to them and look for the prompt on the screen to start the resuscitation process. It’s quick and can help turn the tide in combat. All they need is a bandage or a team cure to get right back into the fight.
Heal
You can take quite a bit of damage in Chivalry 2 and keep fighting the good fight. What you need are associations and you are starting your life with at least one. You can get more bandages by going to a supply store found on the map.
Not entirely beginner stuff, but you’re at the end of the article
Team fire
One thing that you definitely need to be aware of is friendly fire. Whether you’re an archer firing shots into a crowded room or a knight whining in traffic with a giant sword. You can injure your teammates and kill them more easily. It will be pretty obvious that there is either a yellowish hit marker for enemies and a red hit marker for friendly matches. You will still beat your teammates whether you try or not, it’s only part of the game. Try not to kill your friends.
Throws
You can throw your guns. You can throw your shields. You can throw a fish. You can throw anything that you equipped in Chivalry 2.
Have fun
Most importantly, if you are just getting started in the world of Chivalry 2, you will have fun with the game. While there is a lot to do in terms of controls and systems, take these beginner tips on the battlefield and you should be more than ready to compete and have a good time.
